Concrete Scanning at St. Mary’s Hospital, Camrose, AB
We recently completed concrete mapping project at St. Mary’s Hospital in Camrose, AB. This is a proposed location for a new patient bed to be bolted into the concrete floor. The slab was confirmed to be reinforced with Qdeck and wiremesh. Scantec also detected power conduits in the slab. Scantec recommended the client to drill in to the trough areas of the decking only and avoid the anomalous objects in the slab.

How to accurately scan and transfer core location for a 24-inch thick slab? Many times we have been asked:”What is the maximum depth you can scan a slab?”. The answer is: It depends!.
We have all the necessary tools to maximum the penetration depth. For general concrete scanning purposes such as cutting and coring, probably 900 MHz is the lowest frequency we use which designed up to 3ft (1m) of penetration. More common, 2000 MHz and 1600 MHz GPR antennas are used to “see” down to around 1ft.

This week we have completed a scanning project for a general contractor at a busy shopping centre during a store renovation. It was on a waffle slab with varied beam sizes and rebar on the top slab. It is noted that there was no access to the slab bottom as there were other active stores on the below level and the ceiling was completely covered.

We have recently completed this interior scanning at a big fabrication facility in Calgary. The client was an environmental consulting firm drilling both interior and exterior soil boring holes through concrete slab-on-grade. For the interior holes, we would need to identify buried electrical, sewer, water, gas, hydraulic line trenches/features if present within the proposed borehole locations.
They were also trying to drill near a former underground storage tank (UST), so we were able to see the backfill material there as well, which would help us position their boreholes. Reinforcement within the concrete slab on grade was the issue with traditional EM utility locates as the signals would be spreading out. Our typical approach was using a high-resolution GPR antenna to scan the slab itself to clear any conduits and piping within the concrete sprior to performing deeper soil investigation with lower frequency antennas which would provide
